I don’t know about you but I feel like the holidays really snuck up on me this year. One minute I was blasting the A/C and the next, blasting Christmas music while scrambling to figure out holiday gifts for loved ones. So this year in the spirit of doing everything last-minute, I am creating 5 healthy holiday gift ideas that each contain less than 5 ingredients.
Healthy Holiday Gift Idea #1
The first healthy holiday gift idea that I’m sharing is for my spicy chocolate popcorn. This edible gift was inspired by my childhood when the popular holiday gift at the time was gourmet popcorn in a large tin divided in 3 different flavors- butter, caramel and cheddar. Do these even still exist?! It seemed like my parents received a few of those each year and I would devour them!
My version of gourmet popcorn involves a spicy sweet twist. And since I use packaged popcorn, it’s also salty. In other words, it’s totally addicting! So how do you make my spicy chocolate popcorn? That’s the best part- it’s so simple.
What you’ll need…
- Plastic Gift Bags
- Holiday Ribbon
- Holiday Gift Tags
- Lite Packaged Popcorn
- Dark Chocolate Chips (>65% Cocoa)
- Olive Oil
- Cayenne Pepper
Once you gather the gift packaging and ingredients, heat the chocolate in a double boiler or in a microwave, which is my preferred method. For the microwave method, add chocolate chips, olive coconut oil and cayenne (1 Tablespoon of oil and 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne and cinnamon for every 1/2 cup of chocolate chips) to microwave-safe bowl and place in microwave for 30 seconds, stir and repeat till melted. Meanwhile, place the popcorn (2 cups per gift bag) on parchment paper. Then use a spoon to drizzle the chocolate over the popcorn. Refrigerate before adding to gift container of choice, and voila!
- 6 cups popcorn
- 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
- Lay out 6 cups of popcorn (2 cups per bag) on parchment paper
- Place chocolate, oil, and spices in microwave safe boil or double boiler
- Melt chocolate using preferred method
- Drizzle chocolate over popcorn
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes before placing in gift bag
- For the oil, you can use oil of choice (I like using olive oil or coconut oil)
Not only is my recipe for spicy chocolate popcorn easy but it’s also nutritious! Did you know that popcorn is jam-packed with antioxidants? That seems odd but that’s because popcorn is usually doused with butter and salt, especially if you’re eating popcorn at a movie theater. But popcorn has more antioxidants than some fruits! Add spices and chocolate to popcorn and you have a treat that’s rich in flavor and in antioxidants that protect the skin and the heart!
